Testosterone Levels: How do they change over time? Posted By : Tarun Gupta

Posted in Unspecified
Pharmacy Store

There is increasing evidence that some men go through hormonal changes as they age. The most common hormone attributed to these male hormonal changes, often called male menopause, is testosterone. Most of the testosterone (98%) is bound to proteins in plasma, leaving only a small amount of free hormone. Testosterone production is regulated by gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) & luteinizing hormone (LH) in a negative feedback system.

The loss of testosterone may be because of 3 general reasons:

The number and volume of leydig cells in the testicles decrease with age at about 1% per year after the age of 50 years.
Aging leads to loss of the LH pulse amplitude as well as a decreased response of LH to GnRH.
Increase in SHBG lead to a further decrease in free testosterone.

Other factors may also play a role in the levels of testosterone in men, like genetic composition, alcohol (which is known to suppress testosterone by testicular cytotoxicity), decrease blood flow to the testicles and smoking. Obesity itself may play both a causative and effectual role in decreased testosterone levels.

The effects of ageing on testosterone levels may be confounded by other variables that must be considered in the assessment of androgen status. Older men recruited from medical clinics have lower testosterone levels than community-dwelling populations, suggesting that concurrent ill health depresses testosterone levels.

Chronic illness, prescription medication, obesity or excessive alcohol has been associated with a substantial reduction in testosterone levels. A direct effect on serum testosterone levels may be seen with medications such as opiates (change in LH pulse amplitude) or anticonvulsants (hepatic enzyme induction). Surprisingly, various lung disorders have been found to reduce testosterone levels irrespective of age, the effect being more marked in those with lung cancer.

The effects of smoking on total testosterone levels are contradictory and unclear. Elevated levels of the order of 9-25% have been reported by some studies in middle-aged and older smokers while some other studies have identified an inverse relationship between cigarette smoking and testosterone levels.

The effects of alcohol upon testosterone are dependent upon the pattern and duration of usage. Although alcohol inhibits testosterone production but sustained stable alcohol intake in healthy older men has not been found to influence total testosterone levels.

Physical symptoms of abnormal testosterone levels include poor or no erections, decline in sexual activity, loss of muscle strength, fatigue and loss of energy, sleep disturbances, problems in circulations etc while various mental symptoms include decreased intellectual ability and memory loss.

Each individual may experience a different number and type of symptoms. Before assuming that testosterone supplementation is necessary to feel better, you and your doctor may want to run through a variety of diagnostic steps to pinpoint specific causes of your symptoms and a full range of behavioral and other changes that might help you feel better.

Brazilian berry is the newest weight loss miracle Posted By : Jim Mackey

As our lives grow increasingly busy and the stress and pressures from our jobs continues to build, our health typically takes the brunt of the blow. We're sleeping less and spending more time in stressful circumstances. This invariably leads to poor dietary habits which deprives our bodies of nutrients and ultimately intensifies the health impacts we suffer. These dynamics are the primary reason for the popularity of acai, a berry that has been called a "super food."

Those who have used acai claim that it helps to alleviate many common ailments that have stymied doctors and other medical experts for years. But, what is acai? Where does it come from and what are its inherent benefits? Below, we'll discuss the origins of this "super food," the benefits of eating it and whether choosing it is the right dietary choice for you.

Where Does Acai Come From?

The acai berry comes from trees that are native to the rain forests of Brazil. Rich in antioxidants and other nutrients, the berry has been consumed by the tribes and communities within the rain forests for years. Today, the pulp is extracted from the acai berry and used as a staple in these communities for a variety of dishes. Having been discovered by explorers years ago, the acai berry is harvested and exported to countries around the world. Companies that wish to leverage acai's growing popularity in developed nations produce smoothies, juices and sorbets using acai.

Benefits Of Using Acai

There's a long list of benefits that proponents (and marketers) of acai claim is inherent in the berry. Many of these benefits are likely due to the high level of antioxidants (specifically, anthocyanins) found within. These anthocyanins help prevent heart disease. In fact, it's estimated that the acai berry has several times the level of anthocyanins as red wine (also known to help prevent heart disease).

The acai berry is also thought to contain a high level of important vitamins and Phytosterols. Vitamins A, B1, B2, C and E are found in great supply in the berry which helps your immune system battle illnesses and injuries. The Phytosterols in acai are believed to help your cardiovascular system function effectively.

There have even been links between acai and insomnia. Many people who use acai claim that the nutrients and antioxidants within the berry help to regulate the hormones and chemicals within the brain that cause sleeping disorders. Though much is unknown about acai, many nutritionists suggest that people begin taking it to help resolve many illnesses that conventional medicine seems unable to remedy.

Is Acai Right For You?

Researchers continue to test the potency of acai. But, despite how much still remains unknown about the fruit, many people have claimed that their problems with insomnia, weight loss and lack of stamina have largely been remedied by consuming acai on a daily basis. If you have been battling any of the symptoms or conditions mentioned above, consider adding acai to your daily diet.

Loss Of Appetite ?????“ Causes, Prevention And Treatment Tips

Posted in Unspecified
Pharmacy Store

Appetite changes are common with cancer and cancer treatment. Poor appetite has a multitude of causes, but the most likely cause lies in the digestive tract and nearby organs. Individuals with poor appetite or appetite loss may eat less than usual, not feel hungry at all, or feel full (satiated) after eating only a small amount. Appetite loss is common in people with cancer. Certain types of cancer, including ovarian, pancreatic, and stomach cancers, can cause a loss of appetite, usually by affecting a person's metabolism. Appetite loss also occurs in 80% to 90% of people with advanced cancer for various reasons, including changes in metabolism, early satiety from ascites, and other symptoms of cancer. Other causes of appetite loss include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and sedative medications (drugs that cause feelings of calm or sleepiness). It is characterized by a general feeling of not being hungry, getting full faster than normal, or feeling overwhelmed by a normal portion of food. While a reduced appetite may seem harmless, it can lead to severe weight loss, dehydration, fatigue, poor immune function, and malnutrition.

Loss of appetite may be caused by teeth and gum problems, such as periodontal disease or a fractured tooth, which can make chewing painful. Appetite problems can come in different ways and some other physical symptoms of a malfunctioning appetite include the presence of abdominal bloating, persistent indigestion and constipation - sensations of nausea or pain can also be felt if the appetite is affected in some cases. It is one of the most common side effects of cancer treatment, and can have serious consequences. Loss of appetite is also helped along by bad or improper eating habits displayed by the person. Some causes of appetite loss in a person include eating sweets and drinking soft drinks between meals, the consumption of large and heavy meals which are rich in saturated fats at odd times. Additional treatment for appetite loss may include appetite-stimulating medications, medications that help food move through the intestine, nutritional supplement drinks, and tube feeding (often a nasogastric tube that passes through the nose into the stomach).

Prevention of Appetite loss

??? Avoid cooking strong smelling foods (such as fish or cauliflower).
??? Eat several small meals daily, instead of large ones.
??? Feeding through artificial means (such as a tube or IV).
??? Exercising regularly can increase your appetite.
Home Remedies for Appetite loss
??? Oranges are an extremely useful remedy for anorexia.
??? Lime is also a valuable remedy for restoring a lost appetite. A preparation made from this fruit and ginger has been found very effective in overcoming this condition.
??? Sour grapes are another effective remedy for anorexia.
??? Garlic possesses a special property to stimulate the digestive tone of the system and improve appetite. A soup prepared from this vegetable can be of immense help to a patient suffering from anorexia.
??? The use of ginger is valuable in the loss of appetite. About five grams of this vegetable should be ground and licked with a little salt once a day for the treatment of this condition.
??? The application of an ice-bag over the stomach for half an hour before meals, and a cool hip bath once or twice daily, will go a long way in curing anorexia.

Using X-ray crystallography, the scientists produced the first 3-D molecular level images of bleomycin bound to DNA. X-ray crystallography is a widely used analytical technique in which X-rays are directed through crystals and results are deduced from the pattern of diffraction of the X-rays.

"Although bleomycin has been studied for 40 years and much is known about the mechanism of action of bleomycin, without an accurate 3-D picture you can't fully understand how the drug targets and sits on the DNA. If you want to improve on the properties of the drug, to make it a better chemo agent, you need to understand in great detail how it works," said Millie M. Georgiadis, Ph.D., associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at the IU School of Medicine and at the Purdue School of Science. She and Eric C. Long, Ph.D., professor of chemistry & chemical biology at the Purdue School of Science, are senior authors of the study.

A combination chemotherapy regimen including bleomycin was successfully pioneered at the IU School of Medicine by oncologist Lawrence H. Einhorn, M.D., distinguished professor of medicine. This multi-agent therapy, which mutes the toxicity of bleomycin, is now the standard of care for testicular cancer. Because it causes lung damage, bleomycin is not typically used to treat other cancers.

"Our 3-D picture of the structure of bleomycin gives us a much better understanding of exactly how the drug interacts with the DNA so we can begin thinking about engineering a better drug, with less toxicity. Since it's a DNA targeting agent, there's no limit to what type of cancers we could target with bleomycin if we can decrease the toxicity," said Dr. Georgiadis, a structural biologist.

Many successful chemotherapeutics are DNA targeting agents.

This study was published online the week of March 17 in the Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Co-authors of the study also include first author, Kristie D. Goodwin, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow at the IU School of Medicine and Mark A. Lewis, a Ph.D. graduate student in the Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology at the time this study was conducted. This study was funded by American Cancer Society and the National Institutes of Health.

Getting Remedies for Acne Treatment

Posted in Unspecified
Pharmacy Store

Acne is a skin condition, common in teenagers, in which the skin becomes greasy; pores in the skin are blocked resulting in blackheads, and appearing of pimples or cysts on the skin. While acne may strike infants, it is not that serious in them as in teens. Causes Of Acne

The main cause of acne is the sex hormone testosterone (present both in men and women) that causes the sebaceous glands (those present at the roots of the hair) to release an excessive quantity of oil. This excess oil is clogged in the pores of the skin and bacteria starts growing in the oil. A fatty substance results by bacterial growth, which causes irritation of the skin. As the condition get worse, you get blackheads, red bumps, pus-filled spots or cysts. People who are extra sensitive to testosterone suffer more severely from acne. Getting an effective acne remedy is thus recommended as soon as the condition appears.

Getting Remedies For Acne

One working acne remedy is to leave it alone. Do not tear or pick out blackheads. Do not pick or squeeze the pimples since it can make the condition worse and bring scars. Clean the affected area gently and regularly. Do not scrub frequently. You need no get special soaps and shampoos. On the chemical side, benzoyl peroxide cream or gel is the most efficient remedy for acne. It finishes some of the bacteria living on the skin and causes the outermost layer of skin to peel off, a mechanism that opens the blocked pores. If benzoyl peroxide cream irritates your skin, you can stop using it. Be careful when going out in the sun with this formula on; you may burn quickly than before. An antibiotic is usually prescribed for use with Benzoyl peroxide. Another remedy for acne is an anti-acne preparation that contains salicylic acid. It also works to unblock the pores on skin. Some creams/gels contain synthetic vitamin A, which has the quality of drying and peeling the skin. While this is a good remedy for acne, it may be very irritating. Hence, a small amount should be spread thinly on the affected area once daily. Sometimes this treatment makes the acne worse temporarily but then gets better after a few weeks. In case of pregnancy, this treatment is not recommended. Azelaic acid lotion or gel is another remedy for acne. It is applied twice daily. In case it causes irritation of your skin, reduce its use to once daily. In case of pregnancy, consult your physician before using this formula. Antibiotic lotions are effective against infection when you have affected spots filled with pus. These lotions do not treat blackheads or whiteheads. They are applied once or twice daily to the acne-affected areas. Their effect is usually very drying.
